When you tap a tile and it sounds hollow — like knocking on a drum — it means the adhesive bond between the tile and the substrate has failed. The tile has separated from what's holding it down, creating a void beneath it.
Left alone, drummy tiles crack under foot traffic, allow water to penetrate into the substrate and spread the problem to surrounding tiles. In wet areas like bathrooms and pool surrounds, that water can attack the waterproofing membrane beneath — turning a minor tile issue into a major waterproofing failure.
The traditional response is demolition — jack-hammer the tile out, prep the substrate, try to find a matching tile (you usually can't), relay and regrout. It's expensive, disruptive, and almost always visible. There is a better way.

We tap test the area systematically to identify every hollow-sounding tile and map the extent of the problem.
Small holes (2–3mm) are drilled along grout lines adjacent to the loose tile. The tile surface is never touched.
Specialised adhesive is injected under controlled pressure into the void, filling it completely and bonding the tile back to the substrate.
Drill holes are filled with matching grout. The tile is tapped again to confirm the solid bond. Ready to use within hours.
Understanding the cause is important — it tells us whether injection will hold, or whether there's a deeper problem to address first.
Water is one of the biggest threats to tile adhesion. Leaks, failed waterproofing or unsealed grout allow moisture to seep beneath tiles and weaken the adhesive layer over time.
Buildings move. Concrete slabs settle, subfloors expand and contract with temperature, and foundations shift gradually. Without proper expansion joints, tiles have no room to move with the structure — the bond fails instead.
"Spot bonding" — applying adhesive in blobs rather than solid coverage — is a common installation shortcut that creates voids beneath tiles from day one. These fail under traffic and temperature changes.
Tile adhesives have a service life of 15–30 years. Beyond that, chemical breakdown occurs naturally — particularly in Queensland's heat and humidity. Older installations often develop widespread drummy areas as the adhesive simply reaches end of life.
Queensland's climate means significant temperature swings — particularly on outdoor areas, pool surrounds and tiled roofs. Repeated expansion and contraction cycles stress the adhesive bond over time.
As grout cracks and crumbles, water enters through the gaps and attacks the adhesive below. Grout maintenance is the first line of defence — once it fails, tile bond failure often follows.
